All Brighton students participated in a day of service during the Brighton Believes Day of Caring on March 12. The four schools offered age-appropriate service projects and guests that allowed students to demonstrate the Brighton Beliefs and help others.
Council Rock Primary School students wrote letters to a younger class to get them ready for the next grade (second graders wrote to first graders, first graders wrote to kindergarteners, and kindergarteners wrote to incoming kindergarteners). Others wrote cards for residents in local nursing homes to cheer them up.
French Road Elementary School supported Happy Birthday Cha Cha Cha, a local organization that provides birthday bags for families in need. Their goal is that each child feels noticed and cared about on their birthday. So, on their special day, they bring a burst of joy by providing both wants and needs. The school collected 1,104 boxes of macaroni and cheese and students added kindness quotes to every box. Students also wrapped birthday gifts and made birthday cards. The school lined up the mac and cheese boxes like dominoes and set them off before donating them.
Twelve Corners Middle School students have been fostering relationships with senior living residences in Brighton this school year. To help create connections across generations, they started a pen pal program with the Legacy at Clover Blossom, The Gables of Brighton, and The Jewish Home. The TCMS Service Club has also regularly visited Valley Manor to play cornhole. Students had the chance to meet their pen pals at the school on Brighton Believes Day. Valley Manor residents visited the school to play another game of cornhole. During WIN classes, students made sun catchers that were delivered to the senior residences.
Brighton High School students completed numerous service projects. They collected over 500 items for the Brighton Food Cupboard; collected over 100 children’s books for the Rochester Education Foundation; collected over 100 toiletry items for Bivona Child Advocacy Center and the WILLOW Domestic Violence Center of Rochester; assembled over 300 period packs for WILLOW and the Center for Youth; created over 170 birthday cards for The Make-a-Wish Foundation; created over 200 Red Cross Hero Comfort Kits for military veterans; created over 40 fleece blankets for the Center for Youth and Owen’s House; created over 300 pairs of no slip socks for the Center for Youth and Owen’s House; wrote over 80 supportive and positive letters to men and women serving in the military all over the world as part of the A Million Thanks Project; assembled close to 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwich bag lunches to go to the Open Door Mission, complete with a supportive message inside.
Thank you to all of the PTSA volunteers, staff members, and student clubs and teams that helped make the event a success.
